Many business owners find themselves in this situation and are frazzled and frustrated. You might have things that you don’t like doing and think that nobody else likes to do those things. But that’s not true. You can find people who like to do the things that you don’t like to do or that you’re not good at.
Here are 3 quick steps you can take to end the rat race:
Step 1: Make a list of all the things you are doing now. Fill in a timesheet for 45 days.
Step 2: Divide the list of everything you do into three buckets:
Bucket 1: “Things you want to keep”. – This is work you enjoy doing, that plays to your strengths and that you see yourself doing for the
foreseeable future.
Bucket 2: “Work you want to give up one day”. – This is work that you are not good at doing and there is no one else on the team that can do it. You may want to train someone or will need to hire someone to do this work.
Bucket 3: “Work you can delegate NOW” – This is work that can be passed to someone immediately or work that can be outsourced to a 3rd party.
Step 3: Take action! The hardest thing is tracking what you are doing and keeping a timesheet. Yes, you heard me…”A timesheet”.
I realized that if I want to grow my business and have more days off, I needed to understand that I did not have to control and do everything myself.
Back in 2013 I started tracking my time and realized that I was doing a lot of administrative tasks. Shortly after, I hired an Exec Assistant. This person was a game changer. I was able to spend my time on revenue billing and producing value for the company.
Since then, I have had several of Gelderman Landscape Service’s managers complete this exercise, and yes they delegated activities to others to free up valuable time for themselvex.
